Description
Translation provided by Youdao
A figure of the Virgin Mary standing on the crescent moon designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the naked Christ Child in Her right hand and a bunch of grapes in Her left. The swaying pose of the sculpture is accentuated by the drapery of the voluminous cloak, with its curving hemline and detailed interplay of angular and curving folds. There are indentations evident beside the shoulders and feet of the statue which indicate that it may have originally been set into an aureola. Nuremberg or Central Franconia have been suggested as possible origins of this work. Dimensions Height 137 cm Artist or Maker Franconia Circa 1470 Medium Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out and entirely covered with a separately carved board. Minimal remains of former polychromy, the Virgin's face overpainted Condition Report The Child's head and the Virgin's left hand are probably old replacements. The left tip of the crescent moon lost. Wear with minor losses. Provenance South German private collection. Notes VAT: Margin scheme
