剑首最早见于西周时期，主要流行于战国至汉代。其形状大致相近，饰纹较为丰富，有的中心有一圆孔，使用时将其嵌于剑柄的端部。战国以后，玉器形制发生新的变化，出现较多新兴品类，其中尤以全套剑饰器的使用最为显著。而玛瑙器的制作，除原有玛瑙管、玛瑙勒等佩饰器继续使用外，玛瑙剑饰器也应运而生。已知的玛瑙剑饰器，剑首多呈圆饼。此件剑首呈圆形，侧面边缘较厚，内用阴刻线条刻画出勾云纹，简约大气，边缘后中间薄，色彩艳丽，为不可多见的红玛瑙剑首，值得收藏。
