藏传佛教认为佛塔的各部分分别代表地、水、火、空、风五大要素，即日月部代表空，伞盖部代表风，相轮部代表火，覆钵部分代表水，台座部分代表地。意思是说，土依金，金依水，水依风，风依空，而空无所依，也就是所谓『四大皆空』。在佛塔中的瓶身部分，安奉智者舍利、经书及各种吉祥物品，以令绕塔及顶礼者积集功德。此塔为覆钵式藏塔，亦为如来八善逝塔中的『菩提塔』造型，其含义是纪念佛陀三十五岁时在菩提伽耶菩提树下成就无上道境。整件佛塔雕饰精美，细节玲珑秀气，装饰对比繁缛精细，鎏金密实灿烂，富丽堂皇，金光悦目，具有极高的艺术性，代表了那时期工艺的高度水准。
