This large 19th century French émaux ombrants majolica wall plaque was made in France during the 19th century and features a Neoclassical motif depicting a woman lying across the back of a seahorse as it swims across the wavy surface of the ocean. The monochrome image has been finished with the émaux ombrants process which was pioneered in France by Baron A. du Tremblay in the 1840's. Translucent sepia glaze has been poured over the textured surface of the clay before being fired, giving the scene a sense of depth. The central image is bordered by a thin floral band which gives way to a wide shoulder decorated with an elaborate pattern finished in vivid colors. The pattern includes pairs of winged putti in a mermaid form bearing cream scallop shells along with pairs of dolphins which flank peach colored scallop shells. The decoration also includes magenta clusters of coral and arabesque scrolls and fronds, all of which are set against a textured green ground. The overall effect is visually arresting and help to make this piece a standout - be sure to use the zoom function to better appreciate the detail. The plaque is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, it should be noted that the piece shows signs of age consisting of fine craquelure to the glaze in the center and shoulder. The plaque is quite large and measures 16" in diameter and the highest point of the shoulder stands approximately 1.75" from the display surface. The foot rim has been factory pierced to enable the piece to be hung on a wall and has been fitted with a new wire loop so the plaque is ready to hang upon receipt. The foot is unmarked other than the impressed numbers "1110." and "2." as well as the hand painted number "3". The plaque weighs in at 4lbs 11oz. This stunning émaux ombrants plaque displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique French pottery. A striking object sure to be a decorative focal point wherever it is displayed.
